Chicago vs. Washington - Sunday, October 27
The Chicago Bears are 4-2, yet still sit at the very bottom of a competitive NFC North. The Bears will head to Washington in Week Eight, where they will look to secure their fourth consecutive win with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams at the helm. The Commanders are 5-2 at the top of the NFC East and will potentially be looking to win their second straight game without Jayden Daniels after he suffered a rib injury against the Panthers in Week Seven.
Although the rookie sensation Daniels has been the main talking point for the Commanders this season, it seems they may have enough firepower to win without him. In their 40-7 blowout win against the Panthers, backup quarterback Marcus Mariota stepped in and showed why the league is still keeping him around. Mariota completed 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards, throwing two touchdown passes to tight ends Zach Ertz and Ben Sinnott, and stayed away from throwing any interceptions. The Commanders' defense was dominant, allowing only 180 yards and forcing two interceptions from Andy Dalton, including a 67-yard pick-six by Dante Fowler. The defense also recorded two sacks and successfully stopped seven of ten third-down attempts.
Washington have been the surprise story this year, leading the league in points per game with 31.1, and ranking fourth in yards per game with 384.1. This will be a very stiff test for them though, going up against a well-rested Chicago Bears defense that has been very good this year. They are top 5 in terms of points and yards conceded per game, boasting a very well-rounded defense that is tricky to both run and pass on. Washington will be up against it with Jayden Daniels at the helm, and will be considered heavy underdogs if Marcus Mariota has to play.
The Bears have just enjoyed a week off following their post-London bye week, which came after an impressive Week Six victory against the Jaguars. On their trip across the pond, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams excelled, throwing four touchdown passes, while completing 23 of 29 attempts for 226 yards and also rushing for 56 more yards on the ground. Keenan Allen contributed with two touchdown catches, while running back D'Andre Swift added to the offense with 91 yards on 17 carries. The win marked the Bears' first three-game winning streak since late in the 2020 season, and they'll see if they can keep it rolling to make it four against the Commanders in Week Eight.
While their offense has looked elite in recent weeks, Williams and Chicago will have a test against the Commanders. The Commanders allow just 197.6 passing yards a game, good for twelfth in the NFL. Their run defense hasn't been outstanding, allowing 4.9 yards a rush, sixth worst in the league, but the Bears have had trouble finding success on the ground. The Bears are averaging just 3.7 yards a rush in 2024, the second worst in the NFL, and have only managed to put up an average of 104.8 total rushing yards per game.
The Bears have the momentum on their side and a chance to rise in the tight NFC North, and have a good chance of keeping the winning streak alive against the Commanders if Daniels is still sidelined come game time.
