Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings | Monday, December 16, 2024

The 4-9 Chicago Bears could force major disruption in the NFC North this weekend, visiting the 11-2 Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football. The Bears took the Vikings to overtime just three weeks ago, and nearly pulled off the upset, so will go into this one feeling confident against a playoff bound division rival.

The reason for the potential disruption is Minnesota’s current record, just one game back from the 12-1 Detroit Lions. As it stands right now they’re still in the hunt to win the division, but they’ll need to be flawless the rest of the way and hope for a slip up on Detroit's side of the race.

Still, that is plausible with the Lions hosting Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon. If they lose, the door is open for Kevin O’Connells Vikings, but they’ll need to get past Chicago first.

The Bears crumbled against San Francisco last time out, allowing Brock Purdy to throw for 325 yards and two touchdowns, with only five incompletions. They gave up 38 points against a depleted Niners offense, which was a little uncharacteristic for them in 2024.

Chicago’s defense has largely been keeping their games close, allowing 21.4 points per game, the 10th best number in the league. They’ve been good against the pass all year, but the struggles against the run have been more of an issue. That plus allowing explosive plays (their 5.9 yards per play allowed ranks 30th), has led to games slipping away from them.

Caleb Williams actually had a solid game in the loss though, going 17-23 for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Not the highest yardage game, but limited mistakes and a high completion percentage are certainly positives he can take from the game.

Minnesota will be expecting him too, considering the Bears #1 pick threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns against them just a few weeks ago. Minnesota’s front has been superb all year, but they have been vulnerable through the air, and a Caleb Williams growing in confidence could be a problem.

On the other side of things, the Vikings have been flying again offensively in recent weeks, none more so than Jordan Addison. The beneficiary of plenty of double and triple teams on Justin Jefferson’s side, Addison has had two standout games in his last three outings.

He went for 162 and a touchdown against the Bears at Soldier Field, and then last weekend managed 133 and three touchdowns, sinking the Atlanta Falcons late in the game.

This could end up a shootout between one team trying to upset the apple cart, and another trying to stay as close as they can to the Detroit Lions.
