Buffalo vs. Seattle - Sunday, October 27
The Buffalo Bills enter Week Eight with a 5-2 record and a comfortable three-game lead at the top of the AFC East. Seattle are also top of their divison, leading the NFC West by one win. While the Bills have their first-place spot locked up for at least the next few weeks, a win this week is crucial for Geno Smith and the Seahawks to stay in front of their division rivals, the 49ers and Cardinals, who are tied in second with 3 wins each.
The Bills are coming off a dominant 34-10 win against the Tennessee Titans, whose season has been a complete dumpster fire thus far. Former Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper made an immediate impact in his Bills debut, connecting with Josh Allen for four catches, 66 yards, and his first Buffalo touchdown.
Josh Allen celebrated his 100th career start by throwing for 323 yards and two touchdowns, overcoming a slow first half to lead the team to victory. He was supported by a solid performance from rookie receiver Keon Coleman, who topped 100 receiving yards for the first time this season with 125 yards on four catches. It was a great first outing with Cooper in the lineup, but it didn't always look so comfortable, with Buffalo initially trailing 10-0.
Defensively, the Bills forced crucial turnovers, including a critical stop on fourth down that shifted momentum early in the second half. Overall, the win improved Buffalo's record to 5-2, solidifying their position at the top of the AFC East.
The Seahawks are also coming off a week where their offense put up 34 points, in a convincing 34-14 win over the Atlanta Falcons. It was a much-needed bounce-back performance, snapping a three-game losing streak for Seattle and banishing the negative vibes that came after a home loss to San Fran. The game was primarily defined by a dominant defensive display, highlighted by linebacker Derick Hall's 36-yard fumble return for a touchdown, sealing the victory in the fourth quarter. Seattle's defensive unit, which has struggled in previous weeks, stepped up significantly in one of their best performances of the year. They forced turnovers on three consecutive Falcons' possessions in the fourth quarter, including Hall's scoop-and-score, and pressured quarterback Kirk Cousins throughout the game, resulting in three sacks and two interceptions.
Quarterback Geno Smith had a solid outing, completing 18 of 28 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Kenneth Walker for a 17-yard touchdown and found DK Metcalf for a crucial 31-yard score just before halftime, extending Seattle's lead to 17-7 at the break. Despite the win, the Seahawks faced a setback with Metcalf leaving the game with a knee injury, though coach Mike Macdonald expressed optimism about the injury's severity.
With Metcalf out, Smith will still have weapons in the passing game, like Tyler Lockett and Jaxson Smith-Njigba, but will also likely rely on Kenneth Walker and the run game. Walker rushed for just 69 yards in Week Seven against the Falcons but will be matching up with a Bills defense allowing 5.1 yards per rush, which is the fourth worst in the NFL. Both offenses should put up points in this one, so the game will likely go to whichever defense can continue to play at a high level.
