Chiefs vs. 49ers | Sunday, October 20, 2024
The two teams in this game need little introduction, with Levi's Stadium hosting the Super Bowl rematch between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. Andy Reid has a very impressive record of 21-4 in games after his team’s bye week, but they will be going up against a 49ers team who just delivered an impressive win in Seattle, who will also have enjoyed a few extra days of rest after playing on Thursday night.
Brock Purdy was brilliant against the Seattle Seahawks, making lots of plays with his legs, buying time, and passing for 255 yards and three touchdowns. He appears to have taken steps forward this year, which is good news for this weekend, going up against a stingy Chiefs defense that is giving up 17 points per game, which is the best in the NFL, and 305.4 yards per game, which is ninth best in the NFL.
This is another fascinating strength-on-strength matchup this weekend, with the 49ers ranking second in yards per game with 420, and eighth in points per game with 27. With Christian McCaffrey set to miss again due to injury, 49ers fans will anxiously be checking the health status of Jordan Mason, who left last Thursday’s game against Seattle with a shoulder sprain. Isaac Guerendo ended the game nicely with a long run at the end of the fourth quarter, but Shanahan will be hoping that Mason is available, given that he is averaging 5.3 yards per carry on the season for his 609 yards.
On the Chiefs' side of the ball, things are still not exactly flowing smoothly on offense, but there were signs of improvement in their last match against the New Orleans Saints, which ironically came without Rashee Rice on the field, as he is now ruled out for the season. Mahomes has been far from perfect on the year so far, passing for as many touchdowns as interceptions, with six apiece, but it is classic Chiefs' behavior for him to have his first game of the year with over 300 passing yards, one week after he loses his top weapon.
To make up for the loss of Rashee Rice, the Chiefs executed a more run-heavy approach, with Kareem Hunt proving very efficient by picking up 4.2 yards per carry over his two games so far. They also rolled back the years to get JuJu Smith-Schuster going, with him collecting 130 yards on seven receptions against New Orleans. With first-rounder Xavier Worthy offering the speed to take any play to the house, and Travis Kelce now getting into the swing of things, this is still a very dangerous Chiefs offense.
You really can never count these Chiefs out, and the extra week of rest and planning time couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for Andy Reid. He has proven that he knows how to beat these 49ers, having done so on the biggest of stages twice in five years, and you can bet that they will have a good game plan in place to maintain their perfect record on the season.
