Kansas City vs. Buffalo | Sunday, November 17, 2024
The next chapter in this now-legendary series of Bills-Chiefs games takes place on Sunday at Highmark Stadium in upstate New York. Both of these teams have been playoff mainstays in recent years, and this game could well be a precursor to yet another playoff meeting between these two in a couple of months.
Kansas City comes into this one off the back of yet another improbable win, which takes them to a perfect 9-0 on the year. The Chiefs have managed this despite a point differential of just 58, the lowest mark in league history of the 34 teams that have been perfect through nine games. In a far cry from Chiefs teams of several years ago, this team isn’t carried by the offensive brilliance of Patrick Mahomes and co., but rather by an excellent defense led by Steve Spagnuolo.
Mahomes himself is having the worst season of his (admittedly phenomenal) career, with a passer rating of just 90.3, which ranks him 17th in the league among starting quarterbacks. With Rashee Rice still on IR, his main target has once again been Travis Kelce, whose 499 receiving yards rank 4th among tight ends in what is now his 12th season as a Chief.
And while Mahomes has struggled somewhat this year, his Buffalo counterpart Josh Allen continues to impress, with 17 touchdowns and just 4 picks this season, which have helped guide the Bills to 8-2. Last week was a tough outing for Allen, however, in Indianapolis, but despite his two interceptions, the team still came away with a 30-20 victory.
This Bills offense is one of the league’s best, averaging 29 points a game and putting up at least 30 in seven of their eight outings so far, including the last four in a row. This has been achieved arguably without a true WR1, with Khalil Shakir leading the team in receiving yards with 529, the league’s 22nd-best mark. But Allen is not short of options at all, with Keon Coleman, Dalton Kincaid, and running back James Cook all contributing to an offense that ranks 6th in passing touchdowns.
Watching Spagnuolo’s defense deal with Buffalo is probably the most interesting part of Sunday’s game, as KC should be more than a match for Allen and his unit. The Chiefs have given up just 749 yards on the ground, with Chris Jones, George Karlaftis, and co. proving to be a tough nut to crack. The Chiefs also utilize the blitz at the third-highest rate in the NFL at 34.5%, giving Josh Allen another challenge to overcome on Sunday.
This is arguably the league’s best rivalry right now, and the last six games have been split 3-3, with KC winning the three playoff games and Buffalo winning all three regular season matchups. If this trend continues, that would of course mean the end of a perfect season for Andy Reid’s men, but as we all know, this Chiefs team is just a hard one to pick against.
