Kansas City vs Carolina | Sunday, November 24, 2024
The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a close loss to the Buffalo Bills and are now heading into Carolina for Week 12. The Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season against Josh Allen in Week 11 and are tied with the Detroit Lions for the best record in the NFL, at 9-1. The Carolina Panthers are coming off a well-needed bye week in Week 11 and are currently on a two-game win streak—something that most people never thought we would be saying about Bryce Young and company. They still sit at the bottom of the NFC South with a record of 3-7 and are technically not out of the playoff race, whereas, their opponents, the Chiefs, are in the driver's seat in the AFC West and look to continue their dominance on their quest for a third straight Super Bowl.
Carolina's two-game win streak consists of victories against the struggling New Orleans Saints and an overseas win against the New York Giants—two teams widely considered among the worst in football. In Week 9 against the Giants, Bryce Young posted his highest passer rating of the season at 86.4 and has now thrown a touchdown in his last three games after having zero in his first four starts. Credit must be given to the Panthers’ offensive line, which has allowed a sack on just 5.41% of passing plays this season—sixth-best in the NFL.
The Kansas City Chiefs look to get back on track in Carolina after letting Josh Allen and the Bills put up 30 points in their Week 11 loss, the most allowed by the Chiefs all season. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns but paired it with two interceptions, earning a passer rating of 90 for the day—his lowest in the month of November. The Chiefs' defense will need to return to their trademark suffocating football this week and have a good opportunity to do so against a young quarterback.
The second-year quarterback for Carolina will undoubtedly have his hands full this weekend against the Chiefs' defense, which has allowed just 19.1 points per game. The Panthers rank dead last in the NFL in yards per pass at just 5.7. They also rank second-to-last in the NFL in passing yards per game with 170.1 and are 26th in the NFL in completion percentage (62.86%). Carolina has primarily been getting the job done on the ground with Chuba Hubbard, who now has 818 rushing yards on the season—the fourth most in the entire league. The Panthers are top ten in yards per rush at 4.6 and will try their luck attacking a Chiefs defense that allows just 3.6 yards per rush, third-best in the NFL.
While Young and the Carolina Panthers do have some momentum, it's hard to believe that the Panthers' defense will be able to stop Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense, which ranks 11th in passing yards per game (226.5) and the same in points per game (24). While a win for the Panthers would be a great fairytale story for an often-criticized Bryce Young, his win streak will likely come to an end on Sunday.
