Washington vs. Baltimore | Sunday, October 13, 2024
The Washington Commanders and Jayden Daniels will head to Baltimore on Sunday for what many people believe could be the game of the year. Daniels, the rookie quarterback sensation who has taken the league by storm, has looked like an absolute veteran in his first five starts, leading the Commanders to a 4-1 start through his first five weeks in the league.
The LSU product has the fifth-highest QBR in the NFL this season at 106.3, sitting right behind Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson at 107.3. Daniels has thrown for 1,135 yards this season with a completion percentage of 77.1%, and the Commanders lead the NFL in completion percentage so far this season. Last weekend against the Browns, Daniels became the first player in NFL history to record more than 1,000 passing yards and 250 or more rushing yards in his first five career games. Also, following in the footsteps of his dual-threat competitor this weekend, Lamar Jackson, Daniels led the Commanders in rushing yards in Week Five with eleven carries for 82 yards.
Washington leads the NFL in points per game with 31 and leads the league in third-down conversions at 51.67%. They're also a whopping 100% on converting fourth downs, leading the NFL.
Where they do show some signs of weakness, and where Lamar Jackson will certainly try to exploit them, is in the defense, specifically in their secondary. The Commanders are allowing an average of 7.3 yards per pass, which is good for 23rd in the NFL. They also have allowed a completion percentage of 68.71, which is 24th in the league.
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson should be able to abuse their lackluster secondary because of how much respect he demands on the ground. Jackson is fourth in NFL history in quarterback rushing yards with 5,258. He only trails Cam Newton, Michael Vick, and Russell Wilson, a trio that includes two players who are no longer in the league. He was the fastest player in NFL history to reach 5,000 rushing yards and has shown no signs of slowing down.
The former Louisville quarterback has also demonstrated some impressive passing skills this season, which was highlighted by a PFF overall grade of 90.0 from a clean pocket, ranking second in the NFL. In the Ravens' Week 5 overtime victory against the Bengals, he led the Ravens to a remarkable 41 points, showcasing the highest EPA per play of any offense that week. He completed six of his first nine attempts and made key adjustments that led to significant gains, proving he can effectively lead the offense from the pocket and not just through the run.
As the Washington Commanders face off against the Baltimore Ravens, all eyes will be on the quarterback showdown between Daniels and Jackson. One thing Daniels and the Commanders do not have is Derrick Henry, who has been a key asset to this Ravens' run game, complementing Jackson's explosive play. Henry's powerful running style and ability to find the end zone should make this the Commanders' toughest challenge yet.
