Philadelphia Eagles vs. Baltimore Ravens | Sunday, December 1, 2024
This Sunday M&T Bank Stadium features a must-watch faceoff between two of the league’s best teams, as well as a clash between the league’s two standout running backs – Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry. These two men have a huge lead over the rest of the league in rushing, having both cracked 1,300 yards already, with Green Bay’s Josh Jacobs trailing in a distant third with 944.
Barkley, in particular, grabbed headlines following his magnificent performance last Sunday night against the LA Rams, which saw him put up 255 yards on the ground – the 9th best total in NFL history – as he tore apart the Rams' defense for four quarters en route to a comfortable 37-20 Eagles victory.
The ex-Giant has been exceptional this year, and has muscled his way into the MVP conversation, but he’s obviously not the only offensive weapon on this Eagles offense. Despite the disappointment of losing DeVonta Smith to injury, the Eagles still have their WR1 AJ Brown, whose 727 receiving yards rank him 11th in the league, despite missing three games to injury himself.
Overall this Eagles offense looks much improved from the unit that we saw down the stretch in 2023. Jalen Hurts has looked like his old self, with the team averaging 26.9 points a game, the league’s 7th-best figure. Plus the defense (including Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate Quinyon Mitchell) has kept their end of the bargain. After ranking 30th in scoring last season, the Eagles have improved drastically this year under Vic Fangio, currently sitting 6th in points per game allowed, at just 18.1.
However, they can expect a tough test this Sunday, as they face a Baltimore offense led by two MVP candidates in Lamar Jackson, and of course Derrick Henry. Lamar is arguably having the best season of his incredible career, and is tipped by many to pick up a third MVP award as he leads the league in both passing yards with 3,053 and passer rating with 117.9.
This Ravens offense has put up at least 380 yards in all but one game this season, for the league’s best offense in total yards. Yet they still sit at 8-4, behind the 8-3 Steelers in a very competitive AFC North title race. All four of Baltimore’s losses this year have come in one-score games, and with this offense, they really are always in with a chance to win.
On the flip side, the Baltimore defense has been substandard for most of this season, ranking 23rd in points per game allowed, while being responsible for several of the teams losses. However, most of these issues have come through the air, with the rushing defense ranking 2nd in yards allowed so far this season.
This D will be tested to their limit on Sunday in Baltimore, as they face off against Barkley, currently in the form of his life. This is a huge game for both teams, and the winner will put the rest of the league on notice, while cementing their place as a real contender for the Lombardi.
