New York Jets vs Buffalo Bills
The New York Jets have perhaps more questions this coming off-season than any other team in the league. Who’s going to build the team as the new general manager? That’s likely the first to get answered, and once he’s hired, who will be the head coach, and what do the futures of Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Garrett Wilson etc look like?
Rodgers isn’t sure that he wants to continue playing yet, and the Jets are surely unsure if they want to continue with this rather outlandish experiment. Davante Adams surely doesn’t hang around if Rodgers retires or moves on, as that would be the exact same situation he’s just been through with Derek Carr leaving the Raiders.
Then on top of all of that, Garrett Wilson seems pretty perplexed at his lack of usage until it's too late, and he left some rather glowing comments about Mike LaFleur, the former Jets offensive coordinator who is now in the same role with the L.A. Rams.
All of it seems pretty messy, and with just two games left, I don’t doubt that there are many Jets fans who just want it to be over so they can start all over again. But before that can happen, they’ve got to face the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.
In their defense, and to credit their defense, the Jets held Matt Stafford to 110 yards in the Week 16 loss. L.A. scored 19 points, but the Jets only managed nine of their own, marking their 11th loss of the season.
Josh Allen is next on the schedule, but it's all eyes on his throwing hand following some clear discomfort in the latter half of the Week 16 matchup against New England.
The clear frontrunner for the MVP had one of his quieter games of the season against the rival Patriots, and was seen grimacing and flexing his throwing hand on the sidelines late in the game. While he’s been tremendous this season and should walk the MVP award, this Jets defense will come to play this weekend with a chance to at least impact the playoff picture.
With Josh Allen potentially dealing with a hand injury, and the Jets defense being one of the very best coverage units in football on their day, surely there isn’t a potential upset on the cards here?
With a divisional game, nothing is ever certain, and the AFC East has shown that to us already this season, including just last weekend where the high flying Bills were lucky to escape the New England Patriots at home.
On the flip side, if Josh Allen and the Bills find their scoring rhythm, the Jets will struggle mightily to contend. Their 19.5 points per game puts them 24th in the NFL, while they’re also 24th in completion percentage, and passing yards per play. A far cry from the Buffalo Bills, who have the number two scoring offense in football at 31.3 points per game.
Buffalo still has an outside shot at the number one seed, although they’d need the Chiefs to lose their two remaining games. But more importantly and certainly more likely, a win here against the Jets would secure the number two seed at the very minimum.
