New York Jets vs. Jacksonville Jaguars | Sunday, December 15, 2024
At one end of the spectrum, you have the Kansas City Chiefs constantly finding new ways to win, and at the other, you have the New York Jets constantly finding new ways to lose. In week 14, they finally enjoyed a good outing on offense, only to leave too much time on the clock for Miami, who worked their way downfield, set up the game-tying field goal, and then didn’t let Aaron Rodgers touch the ball in overtime. They are now officially eliminated from playoff contention, rendering this one of the most disappointing seasons in Jets’ history, which says a lot.
They will, however, have an opportunity to put some lipstick on the pig this weekend against a Jacksonville team that is amongst the league's worst. The Jags moved to a 3-10 record last week with a dull 10-6 victory over the equally bad Tennessee Titans. They are giving up the most yards per game, with 396.1, and rank 28th in points conceded per game, with 26.5. New York have lost four in a row now, but it is hard to see them falling to these dismal Jags.
Yes, the Jets have been poor themselves, ranking 25th in the NFL, with just 19.3 points scored per game, but there is no way that a team that has Garrett Wilson, Davante Adams, Aaron Rodgers, and Breece Hall (questionable) doesn’t put up points against this defensive unit. Jacksonville are giving up the second most passing yards per game this year, with 263.5, and are ranking in the bottom third for rushing yards conceded per game as well. Aaron Rogers and his offense genuinely did look good this weekend against a good Miami defense, and this weekend should be a rare outing that they enjoy.
The other thing that New York has working in their favor is that it won’t take too many points to outscore the Jacksonville Jaguars. With Trevor Lawrence out of the lineup, and sometimes even with him in it, the Jags' offense has looked very poor. Mac Jones has completed 65% of his passes for 732 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions so far this year, helping the Jags average a whopping 10.75 points over their last four games. Jones’ presence in the lineup has threatened to take away the Jaguars' number one threat, rookie wideout Brian Thomas Junior, but his immense talent has helped him produce at least 76 yards in each of the last three games. Thomas is now under 150 yards away from hitting the 1,000-yard mark, and he has undoubtedly provided a glimmer of hope in what has otherwise been a dark season.
Brian Thomas Junior will likely be keeping an eye on the health status of Sauce Gardner, the Jets’ star cornerback, who missed the most recent game due to a hamstring injury. He would be a big loss for New York, who have been solid enough in the secondary, limiting opposing offenses to 186.9 passing yards per game, which is the fourth-best in the NFL. Without Sauce in the lineup, Brian Thomas Junior will fancy his chances at fighting back.
On the whole, New York are limiting opponents to the fourth fewest yards per game, with 306.8. They haven’t quite been able to make the most of this though, ranking only 19th in the NFL with 23.1 points conceded per game. Mac Jones does not classify as a daunting opponent, but he does at least have some useful weapons in Thomas and Evan Engram in the passing game, to go along with a dynamic one-two punch in the backfield, with Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby. The odds are stacked against the Jags, but you really do never know with these Jets.
