New York Jets vs. New England | Sunday, October 27, 2024
The New York Jets are the most all in to win it right now team in football, and yet find themselves 2-5 and without a permanent head coach. The firing of Robert Saleh, and the timing of the decision by team owner Woody Johnson is still baffling, and the team now faces a mountain to climb to become competitive in the AFC.
GM Joe Douglas is also in the final year of his contract, and perhaps his final hail mary attempt at keeping his job was the trade he made for Davante Adams. Aaron Rodgers now has everything he could possibly need to execute a playoff caliber offense, including two talented running backs and a plethora of wide receiver talent, but the results just aren’t coming.
Some of that falls on the struggles of the offensive line, while a lot of it also points towards play calling and the execution of those plays. In the loss to the Steelers Rodgers was far from helped by drops and the performance of his receivers, with a perfectly timed ball up the sideline between coverage to Garrett Wilson bouncing off of his chest and turning into an interception that went all the way back to the Jets one yard line.
With an extra week of practice and time to integrate Davante Adams into the system, the Jets will be hoping for a much improved performance this weekend, and it's already feeling like now or never time for them this early in the year. At 2-5, another loss would devastate their chances, and if it doesn’t happen this year, who knows how many years Aaron Rodgers has left to offer.
The Jets defense is the number two unit against the pass, allowing just 164.7 yards per game so far this season, as well as a 59.75% completion percentage (5th), while also being one of the most dominant teams in pressures and sacks. Again, the decision to fire the defensive minded head coach that built that unit remains a mystery.
Their opponent this week, the New England Patriots, have begun their adjustment to life with rookie quarterback Drake Maye. The former North Carolina talent made his second start in London at the weekend, and actually played pretty well despite the team's loss.
Maye threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns in the game at Wembley Stadium, but the team around him fell flat, and head coach Jerod Mayo is already facing heavy criticism.
The Patriots failed to run the ball, at all, which with a rookie quarterback settling into his second start is never ideal. In fact, Drake Maye’s 18 yards on three scrambles tied for the teams highest rushing total on the day.
The play calling was questionable, and the defense lulled against the Jaguars, allowing Tank Bigsby to run for 118 yards and two touchdowns, while Brian Thomas Jr destroyed the pass coverage with five catches, 89 yards and a touchdown of his own.
The Patriots defense is allowing nearly 360 yards a game, while giving up 25 points (25th), 5.7 yards per play (25th), and allowing a whopping 46.51% conversion on third downs (29th). They’re not getting off the field, or getting pressure, and the results have been a problem for them because of it.
