Detroit vs. Dallas | Sunday, October 13, 2024
The Dallas Cowboys did very well to walk away from their tough away fixture in Pittsburgh with a win, outlasting the Steelers thanks to a clutch last-minute drive from Dak Prescott. Prescott was far from perfect on the day, given that he also threw two interceptions, but he deserves a lot of praise for delivering when it mattered most against a very tough defense.
Dallas has a very difficult stretch of games ahead, starting this week against the Detroit Lions, and then going on to play the 49ers, Falcons, Eagles, Texans, and Commanders. They absolutely needed that win in Pittsburgh, and they got it. This week, they benefit from playing at AT&T Stadium, but they will need all of the home advantage they can get, going up against a Detroit Lions team that is stocked with talent and well-rested after their bye week.
Detroit enters the game fully healthy and thriving on offense, having posted the third-most yards per game this year with 397, and the seventh-most points per game with 26. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery are as good of a two-headed backfield as you could ask for, with both having already rushed for over 270 yards and seven touchdowns between them. The Lions want to run the ball, and they should fancy their chances of succeeding with that game plan this week, going up against a Dallas defense that is conceding 135 rushing yards per game, which ranks 24th in the NFL.
With one of the better offensive lines in the NFL, the Detroit run game is difficult to stop, and when they get going, it makes defenses very vulnerable to the play-action passing game. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta are all very explosive playmakers who can attack in several different ways, and Jared Goff is very good at finding ways to feed them when he is well-supported by the run. In the last game before the bye, he completed all 18 of his pass attempts for 292 yards and two touchdowns.
The reality is, this Detroit offense is a well-oiled machine that can overwhelm you on the ground as well as through the air. That is a recipe for disaster for a Dallas defense that has given up the 23rd-most points this year and will be missing its two most important players, DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons.
With those two players missing, it certainly feels like the Lions are going to be way too much of a handful, but when you have Dak Prescott on your team, you always have a chance. As I already mentioned, Prescott came up clutch to get the win last week, and he remains one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL, with one of the best wide receivers at his disposal. CeeDee Lamb is yet to pass 100 yards in a game this year, but this is a game where the Cowboys are going to have to rack up the points to keep up with a very talented Detroit offense. The Cowboys will need Lamb and Prescott to be at their absolute best if they are to have a chance. This one should be spicy.
