METS @ BREWERS 10/2/24
The New York Mets earned a Game 1 upset victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night to take a 1-0 lead in their National League Wild Card series. The Mets used a huge fifth inning to take the 8-4 win. Trailing 4-3 heading into the top half of the fifth inning, Mark Vientos had a key two-run single in a five-run inning that gave the Mets the win.
The Mets could surprise everyone and end the series with a win in Game 2. They will trot out Sean Manaea on Wednesday night in another rematch of sorts. Manaea has been one of the hottest pitchers in baseball over the second half of the season. New York had won eight of his starts in a row before he faced Milwaukee in the Mets final series of the regular season.
The Brewers tagged Manaea for 7 hits and 6 runs, 5 of which were earned, and went on to win 8-4 last Friday night. Now, Manaea gets another shot at the Brewers, only this time he can send the Mets to the NL Division Series with a victory. Since June 26, the Mets have won 15 of Manaea’s 18 starts.
Milwaukee has chosen Frankie Montas to pitch Game 2. Montas is 3-3 with a 4.55 ERA since being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds. Montas was opposite Manaea in that game on Sept. 27. The Brewers right-hander pitched 4.0 innings, gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs in Milwaukee’s win.
Ironically, the Mets have had difficulties winning on the road and winning on the road in Milwaukee. New York is 3-6 SU in its last nine games on the road. On the road in Milwaukee, the Mets have really struggled. They are just 4-15 SU in their last 19 games in Milwaukee. One of those wins came last night and if they can find a way to win one more in the next two days, they will be off to the NLDS.
The Under is the trend here. Four of Milwaukee’s last six games have gone Under the total. Six of the last nine Mets-Brewers games have gone Under and 10 of the Brewers last 15 home games have also landed on the Under.

Sean Manaea got shelled by the Brewers last Friday. Don’t expect six runs again, but you can expect a few. Frankie Montas has been pretty inconsistent all season long. Before giving up a pair of runs to the Mets last Friday, he gave up 7 earned runs to Arizona. Montas ERA for the season, including his time with Cincy this year, is 4.84. Montas has also struggled at home this season. He’s just 1-7 with a 4.97 ERA at American Family Field.
