Two NFC teams with playoff ambitions will do battle this weekend, with the Seattle Seahawks hosting the Green Bay Packers. Seattle now finds themselves sitting pretty at the top of the NFC West, thanks to a stumble by the Arizona Cardinals. They now have a one-game buffer over them, and a two-game buffer over the previous champion 49ers. Another win here will go a long way to securing the division title and a playoff berth. For Green Bay, they are likely out of the race for the NFC North, but can all but lock in a wildcard spot with a win here.
The story of Seattle‘s resurgence has been their defense, who have limited opponents to an average of 15.5 points over the last four games. Mike MacDonald made his name for his dominant defense in Baltimore last year, and whilst it has taken some time to get going this year, his unit seems to be coming together now. They will be tested this week though against a very talented Green Bay offense that ranks inside the top 7 for both points and yards gained.
They are thriving off of the physicality that Josh Jacobs has brought to the lineup, propelling them to 144.7 yards per game on the ground, which is the fifth most in the NFL. Whilst Seattle have been much better on defense in recent weeks, they did just give up 122 total yards and a touchdown to James Conner of the Cardinals, which suggests Jacobs could be in for a good day.
One player who will be looking for a bounceback is Jayden Reed, who had 0 yards against the Lions last week, despite leading the team with almost 700 receiving yards. He has been brilliant this year, offering the explosive element of the passing game, which has seen Jordan Love get inside the top 10 with 21 touchdowns, despite playing 2 fewer games than the rest of the top 10. Seattle are ranking as a top-10 passing defense, so this should be a fun contest to watch.
When Seattle have the ball, perhaps we should be expecting to see a bit more of Zach Charbonnet. He looked brilliant when covering for Kenneth Walker last week, averaging 6.1 yards per carry for his 134 yards and 2 scores. He is also a dangerous weapon out of the backfield as a receiver, making him and Kenneth Walker a lethal one-two punch, especially when you consider defenses also have to worry about DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Green Bay have been solid on defense this year, ranking just inside the top 10 with 21.1 points conceded per game. Their weak point is the pass defense, giving up 222.2 passing yards per game, which Geno Smith will absolutely look to exploit. He completed 80% of his passes for 233 yards and 1 touchdown last week, which produced a passer rating of 110.1.
This is shaping up to be a fun one, but the pressure is much more on Seattle here, who need a win to retain their grip on the division. Can they get a huge win at home against a very good NFC rival?
