New England vs. Buffalo | Sunday, December 22, 2024
This AFC East clash is showcasing two teams at very different ends of the NFL spectrum, with the Buffalo Bills hunting down Kansas City for the number one seed in the AFC, and the Patriots challenging a whole host of bad teams for the number one overall pick in the NFL draft. Despite their 3-11 record, Patriots fans have got to be feeling pretty good about this season, with rookie quarterback Drake Maye delivering solid performances each and every week.
In week 15, he completed 82.6% of his passes against the Cardinals, for 202 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, earning a passer rating of 99.6. His development is all that really matters this year, and the fact that he has played well with arguably the worst supporting cast in the entire NFL is a cause of great optimism for New England fans. This week, he will take on a Buffalo defense that has conceded 86 points over their last two games, which suggests a good outing could be on the cards. Particularly when you consider that the Bills are ranking 25th in the NFL with 227.8 passing yards conceded per game.
When Buffalo takes to the field, all eyes will be on the MVP front-runner, Josh Allen. The teams' defensive struggles have meant that he has needed to be at his brilliant best in recent weeks, which he has, leading Buffalo to 90 points over the last two games. With Allen himself scoring 10 touchdowns during that stretch, he has officially accounted for 60 of those 90 points. Two weeks ago, against LA, he became the first quarterback since the merger to score three rushing and three passing touchdowns, perfectly exemplifying what a one-man wrecking crew he is.
On Sunday, it is pretty difficult to see how the Patriots' defense contains him. They are giving up 24.1 points per game, which is 23rd in the NFL, and rank in the bottom half as both a rushing and passing defense. Allen is simply too good to not turn this into another points-fest, especially when you consider how well his partners in crime in the backfield are playing. James Cook is well on track for over 1000 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry for his 828 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. Ray Davis has looked solid as a rookie, and Ty Johnson proved just how good he can be as a receiver last week, when collecting 114 yards against the Lions.
Behind Buffalo’s elite offensive line, this arsenal of talent is amongst the most dangerous in the NFL, and with New England ranking 21st in rushing yards conceded per game, with 127.4, they should absolutely feast.
Despite the vulnerabilities on defense, there should be very little cause for concern here for Buffalo. Yes, these divisional matchups can sometimes offer up strange results, but this is a switched-on, and uber-talented roster that should have no problems taking care of business. On the New England side, fans will be eager to continue enjoying the upward trajectory of young Drake Maye, who, in many ways, plays a similar style of ball to Josh Allen.
