Austin Gomber starts against Houston's Hunter Brown tonight. Both pitchers have ERAs above 4.00, but one look at their recent histories and you'll see that Brown is the better option. He had one bad start - for the record books bad! - in April where he gave up 9 ER in just 0.2 innings. Since then, Brown's ERA is 3.38 and if you look just at the last 30 days (5 starts) you'll see that Brown's ERA is 1.45 and he has a 31.9 percent strikeout rate.
Gomber, on the other hand, pitched fairly well early in the season, but he's been a disaster lately. He's lost four straight starts and has given up 19 ER in that stretch. He's been on the wrong end of four consecutive blowout losses. With the Rockies bullpen being the worst in the majors, I like the Astros to cover the run line.
PHILADELPHIA @ DETROIT (PHI -131, 7.5)
PHILLIES -1.5
This will be one of the best pitching matchups of the season. Ranger Suarez of the Phillies goes up against Tarik Skubal of Detroit. All things being equal, the Phillies have the edge here. They are No. 2 in MLB in scoring and No. 4 in OPS. Detroit ranks in the bottom-10 in both of those categories (among others).
Skubal is 8-3 with a 2.50 ERA, but he has struggled in his last two starts. He gave up 4 ER in each of his last two trips to the mound and took losses to Houston and Atlanta. Even if he pitches well here, don't expect the Tigers lineup to have success against Suarez. He's 10-1 with a major league-best 1.75 ERA.
Philadelphia won last night 8-1. That made it 7 straight victories for the Phillies against the Tigers. Tonight makes 8.
OAKLAND @ LA ANGELS (LAA -125, 8.5)

Whatever Angels P Tyler Anderson is doing for the Angels this season is simply unsustainable. His record is only 6-7, but his ERA is 2.48. That's odd because he ranks dead last among all qualified pitchers in K-BB percentage. Anderson also has the second-highest xFIP of all qualified pitchers at 5.12. His xERA sits at 4.48. All that translates into Anderson being the luckiest pitcher in MLB this season.
Oakland's lineup doesn't scare anyone. The A's are 28th in scoring, but they have been hitting lefties fairly well over the last month. Oakland ranks 7th in OPS vs. LHP over the last 30 days. Mitch Spence (4-3, 3.86) gets the start for the A's and he can do enough to keep Oakland in this one. The A's 7th-ranked bullpen can finish it. The price is right for an A's win tonight.
