Two very good pitchers will battle it out in this one. Kevin Gausman start for Toronto and Hunter Brown will take the mound for the home Houston Astros. Gausman has dominated the Astros and this current Astros lineup. In 85 plate appearances against current Houston hitters, Gausman has a 48.2 percent strikeout rate. That's almost unheard of for any MLB pitcher.
This season, Gausman is 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA. The Blue Jays have won each of his last two starts. Gausman pitched a combined 14 innings, allowed just 2 ER and struck out 16 batters. In his last start against the Astros (which came in 2023), Gausman pitched 7 innings and allowed just 1 earned run. He struck out 13.
rown is developing into one of the best starters in the majors. He's 2-1 this season with a 1.50 ERA so far. His K rate is over 25 percent and his hard hit rate is 28.3 percent. He doesn't walk a lot of batters and doesn't allow many baserunners. That's why he has four straight quality starts to begin the 2025 season.
Brown pitched 6 innings in each of his last two games against Seattle and St. Louis. He didn't allow an earned run in either and only struck out a total of 7 batters. He keeps the ball on the ground (58% GB rate) and doesn't give up many runs.
Toronto's F5 O/U record is 7-12-2 while Houston's is 8-10-2. Two of Gausman's starts and three of Brown's have gone Under the F5 total.
