Tonight's total is a reflection of the starting pitching matchup. Sonny Gray goes for St. Louis. Paul Skenes gets the start for the Pirates. Gray has made two starts so far this season. He was solid in his first one. Gray pitched 5 innings, struck out 6, and allowed just 2 ER in a 5-3 win over the Minnesota Twins.
Gray came back in his next start and got roughed up a little. He would surrender two home runs, one of which was hit by Mike Trout. In the end, Gray allowed 5 hits and 5 ER which is why his season ERA sits at 5.73 for the season. St. Louis did go on to win that game 12-5. Gray was not involved in the decision.
Skenes has pretty much picked up where he left off last season. He has also made two starts. His last one was a beauty. Skenes pitched 7 innings, allowed just 3 base hits, no earned runs, and he picked up a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay.
Skenes gave up 2 ER in his first start so his season ERA is now 1.46. He has 13 strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched. Skenes is one of the dominant pitchers in MLB. The Pirates always seem to play better when he is on the mound.
Recently, the Pirates have been playing well. They won the first game of this series, 8-4, last night. They closed out their weekend series with the Yankees with a 5-4 win. Pittsburgh has averaged 5 runs a game over its last 5. Gray has a career 4.20 ERA against the Bucs and in his last start against them last September, he gave up 4 ER.
