ROCKETS @ SUNS 3/30/25
When the Phoenix Suns host the scorching Houston Rockets on Sunday, they will be itching to give their hopes of making the playoffs a shock. With two straight losses, Phoenix (35-39) is currently in 11th place in the Western Conference. Theo Suns are one game behind the Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings, who are tied for ninth. It seems likely that two of these three teams will secure the final two spots in the play-in tournament.
The Suns' 124-109 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis on Friday cost them the chance to move up to 10th place, pushing them past Dallas. The Suns’ Devin Booker was held to 10 points, which was his season low, while Kevin Durant scored 23 points.
With career-highs of 22 points and 10 assists in 26 minutes, second-year guard Collin Gillespie filled in for Bradley Beal, who missed his sixth consecutive game due to a left hamstring injury. While Booker is ranked 10th in the league with an average of 25.3 points per game, and Durant is sixth in the league with an average of 26.8 points per game. None of the other Suns are in the top 50.
It will help the Suns in their quest to move up the standings if Gillespie can continue to offer a legitimate third offensive option, especially if Beal's injury problems persist.
Phoenix has lost both of its games this season and their last three meetings against Houston. In order to stop the Rockets, Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer is aware that his team must compete and perform better on both the offensive and defensive ends.
Houston (48-26) is now 1.5 games ahead of the Denver Nuggets and in second place in the Western Conference after winning 11 of its last 12 games. The Rockets easily defeated the Utah Jazz 121-110 on the road on Thursday, continuing their incredible recent run.
Jalen Green scored 21 points, and Alperen Sengun finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Utah. Sengun contributes 19.2 points and a team-high 10.5 rebounds per game, while Green leads the Rockets in scoring with an average of 21.5 points.
