The Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees begin a three-game series tonight. Seth Lugo will take the mound for the Royals. Carlos Carrasco gets the start for the Yankees. Last season, the Yankees won the season series against the Royals 5-2.
For the fourth time this season, Seth Lugo will open the series. Lugo has been solid. In his most recent effort, he held Minnesota to just two runs in 5.2 innings, but he received no offense and took the loss. The veteran has a 1-1 record in 16.2 innings pitched this year, a 3.24 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and has given up two runs or fewer in two of his three appearances. Lugo has a 5-2 record in 35.1 innings pitched against the Yankees, with a 2.55 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP.
The Royals continue their road trip. Although they are just two games below .500, they have yet to find their groove this season. They've only managed to win one series. The Royals lost a series in Cleveland this past weekend because of poor pitching that allowed 15 runs. KC did win three of four games against Minnesota last week. The Royals are averaging 3.25 runs per game and their pitching staff is fourth in ERA at 3.15.
The Yankees will start the series with Carlos Carrasco on the rubber. Early in the season, Carrasco has made mistakes. Last week, he was given the loss after giving up four runs in 4.1 innings against the Tigers. He has a 1-1 record, a dismal 7.71 ERA, and a 1.63 WHIP after giving up 10 runs in his 11.2 innings pitched this season. He did not pitch against Kansas City last season.
The homestand for the New York Yankees continues. Out of their five series this season, they have suffered three losses. The Giants dealt New York a series loss over the weekend. They responded with a victory on Saturday and a 5-4 loss to end the series after losing 9-1 in the first game. They scored 13 runs while giving up 18.
Since his incredible first few games, Aaron Judge has cooled off. The 32-year-old sensation has gone eight straight games without a home run. Still, Judge's numbers are astounding; he has a scorching 1.2 OPS, 20 RBIs, and six home runs. Last season, he had four RBIs against the Royals. New York is ranked second in MLB with an average of 6.3 runs per game.
Lugo has only won three of his last eight games. Carlos Carrasco has spent most of his career pitching in the AL Central, so he is familiar with Kansas City. He has a 3.95 ERA and a strong 1.23 WHIP against the Royals. In his two home games, the Yankees have a 2-0 record.
