New Orleans vs. Los Angeles - Sunday, October 27
After a strong 2-0 start to the season, the New Orleans Saints have lost five consecutive games and are now sitting at third in the NFC South. The Chargers are 3-3, third in the AFC West, and are coming off a two-point loss to Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals. Both of these teams will be hungry for a win this weekend if they want to stay in the playoff hunt.
The Saints' Week Seven matchup with the Broncos on Thursday night was the latest disappointment out of New Orleans, with rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler filling in for the injured Derek Carr. Rattler was missing two of the Saints' best weapons in Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, who were both sidelined with injuries, and it showed. He also lost two fumbles, one of which was returned for a touchdown. The Saints’ injuries also included both of their starting cornerbacks, with Paulson Adebo now out for the season with a broken femur. When it rains, it pours.
With Shaheed out for what may be months, and Olave still in concussion protocol, this New Orleans offense may be in trouble against a mighty Chargers defense in Week Eight. Los Angeles has held opponents to just 13.8 points per game this season, the best in the NFL. They rank top ten among NFL defenses in rushing yards allowed per game (111.2) and passing yards allowed per game (184.2). Chargers linebacker Joey Bosa has also missed three straight games, so if he returns to action this week against the Saints, Rattler will be in for an even tougher outing.
Things shouldn't be as hard for Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. This Saints defense cannot seem to figure out how to stop any offense, allowing 25.7 points per game, 26th in the NFL. They also allow the most yards per play in the entire NFL with an average of 6.1 yards. With an injured secondary, Herbert should have no problem in the passing game, attacking defensive backs that are allowing 248.1 passing yards per game, fifth worst in the league. However, if the Chargers decide to go run-heavy, which we know Harbaugh likes to do, they should find success on the ground as well, with the Saints conceding the fourth most rushing yards per game, with 146.7.
The matchup is perfect for Herbert and the Chargers' offense to get back on track after what has been a major disappointment so far this season. The Chargers are 24th in passing yards per game and just 18th in rushing yards per game, ranking in the bottom quarter of the league in total yards per game. If the Chargers want to get anywhere near the postseason this year, they’re going to need to step up on the offensive side of the ball and help out this superstar defense.
