Seattle vs. San Francisco | Sunday, November 17, 2024

The NFC West has been pro football’s tightest division this year, and here we see a clash between two teams desperate for a victory to bolster their playoff hopes. San Francisco’s injury issues have been well-documented this year, but they’ve still had enough to grind their way to a 5-4 record so far, following last week’s narrow road win at Tampa Bay.

Their opponents in this one are the Seattle Seahawks, who enjoyed a bye week in Week 10 after a rough stretch that saw five losses in six games, culminating in an OT divisional loss to the LA Rams in Week 9. As always, this matchup promises to be a feisty affair as we approach the business end of the NFL season.

To start with the visitors, the Seahawks’ passing offense has been extremely productive this year, even if the team hasn’t always converted yards into points. Veteran quarterback Geno Smith leads the league in passing yards per game this season with 284.4, although no player in the league has thrown more picks than him, with Sam Darnold and Jordan Love both matching his 10 on the season.

This season has been a mixed bag for Smith, but he’s had to take charge often as the Seahawks’ rushing attack has been so lackluster through the first nine games. On the ground, Seattle has just 821 yards so far, ranking 4th last in the league, with Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet struggling to cause too many problems for defenses.

Indeed, the last time they faced the 49ers, the Seahawks managed just 52 yards on the ground against Kyle Shanahan’s men, which is San Fran’s best defensive total this year. Despite notable defensive injuries to Dre Greenlaw and Javon Hargrave, the Niners' defense still ranks 9th in yards allowed and has been vital in several close wins this year, including last week’s squeaker in Tampa.

Despite several rough losses and injury issues, the Niners have kept marching this year, although they still look a far cry from the team that took last year’s Super Bowl to overtime. And while he’s lost plenty of offensive weapons throughout the year, Brock Purdy has continued to impress this season, with only Lamar Jackson picking up more than his 8.8 Yards per Attempt.

Purdy may always divide opinion in this league, but his quarterback rating of 66.6 ranks 7th in the league this year, and he’ll be hoping to keep that up against the league’s 23rd-best scoring defense this Sunday at home. Crucially, the 49ers had Christian McCaffrey back for the Tampa game last week, and if he can put up another 113 scrimmage yards here, that could be vital to the Niners' chances of victory over their long-time rivals.

The 49ers are currently on a six-game winning streak in this rivalry, and Vegas has them at 6.5-point favorites to extend that on Sunday. If McCaffrey and co. can get going early, it would be hard to bet against exactly that this week.
