Pittsburgh vs. Washington | Sunday, November 10, 2024
This is a fascinating clash between two teams trying to remain on top of their respective divisions, with the Washington Commanders hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday afternoon. Both are fairly well-rounded teams, who have kept it close in most of their losses this season. The Commanders opened against the Buccaneers, and though they lost by a 17-point margin, they showed serious improvement as the season went on, with convincing wins against the likes of the Bengals and Bears in the weeks that followed. They have easily been the surprise of the season, with Jayden Daniels taking the league by storm as a rookie, top 5 in the league for average passer rating and completion percentage. This, combined with his great mobility, has helped the Commanders to a 7-2 record, most recently downing their division rival Giants 27-22 at Metlife.
The pieces around Daniels on offense have been stellar, with Terry McLaurin and Brian Robinson on track to have career seasons, and veterans such as Zach Ertz and Austin Ekeler fitting in to form the 3rd best-scoring offense in the NFL. It has been significantly less harmonious in Pittsburgh, however, who swapped Justin Fields for Russell Wilson in week 7. They’ve been decent with both men under center but have been far from the elite conversation when it comes to scoring, sitting at an average 13th in that particular category.
Instead, most of Pittsburgh’s strength lies in its defense, allowing the second-fewest points this season. TJ Watt has, of course, been a focal point, making it on the leaderboard for sacks with 6.5, 10 tackles for loss, and his league-leading 4 forced fumbles. Rookie Beanie Bishop and Donte Jackson have 3 picks each this season, both top 10 in the league. The Steelers have the 4th-most takeaways in 2024 with 15 and have allowed only 724 rushing yards on the season, the 4th lowest tally in the league. Washington, on the other hand, has allowed almost 1,300.
Much like Pittsburgh’s offense, the Commanders’ defense has been solid—not exactly amazing. They kept some high-powered offenses in Arizona, Cincinnati, and Baltimore fairly at bay but haven’t been able to keep any completely quiet apart from the woeful Panthers. The addition of Marshon Lattimore via trade should help matters and improve their ability to generate turnovers to give themselves a better chance at winning.
Pittsburgh hasn't faced an offense nearly as strong as Washington’s yet, so this game will prove to be a real test of their defensive makeup. The Commanders have shown slight signs of slowing down though, with Jayden Daniels still nursing a rib injury he picked up against Carolina and Brian Robinson questionable for Sunday. They’re not due for their bye until week 14, and with the Steelers fresh off of their bye in week 9, that could make a significant difference in the freshness of both sides.
