Tennessee vs. Detroit | Sunday, October 27, 2024

Tennessee will continue on the road this week to face the Detroit Lions after suffering a pitiful loss at the hands of the Buffalo Bills in Week 7. The Titans are now 1-5, with Will Levis' game status up in the air due to a shoulder injury.

These two teams are on the opposite end of the spectrum offensively so far this season, with one side failing to find any sort of rhythm and/or protect the football, while the other has the most efficient offense in football.

Jared Goff and Ben Johnson have created the league's best quarterback to offensive coordinator duo, with perfect chemistry guiding them to their well respected 5-1 record. Having beaten the rival Vikings in a thriller in Week 7, the Lions are absolutely considered one of the league's biggest Super Bowl threats, and their offense isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Jared Goff and the Lions rank #2 in pass completion percentage (73.6%), while cruising to the number one spot in yards per pass at almost 10 yards a play (9.3). The effectiveness of the run game, and the genuine threat posed by the one-two punch of both David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, creates the perfect blend of an explosive run game paired with an efficient pass game, and as of right now, the Lions are flying.

It was Jahmyr Gibbs this past weekend, who broke through for an incredible touchdown run on his way to a two touchdown game and 116 rushing yards on just 15 carries. He and David Montgomery have contributed to the leagues #2 rushing offense in touchdowns per game, and the number four offense in rushing yards per game (144). In other words, the Lions can beat you any way they please, and to beat them, you’ll need to be near perfect in every facet of your defense for the entire game.

Tennessee have actually fielded one of the league's top five passing defenses this season, in spite of their record. They allow 6.3 yards per pass (3rd), 166.7 passing yards per game (also 3rd), and a 59.65% completion percentage (4th). The only caveat to that is that they’re not taking the ball away anywhere near enough.

Not only are they effective against the pass, but the unit led by coordinator Dennard Wilson in his first season with the team is also a top ten unit against the run.

Their problems lie with the offense, which is adjusting to life after Derrick Henry in the ground game, and failing to utilize its weapons in the pass game. Neither Calvin Ridley nor Deandre Hopkins have cleared 200 receiving yards so far this season, and both have just one receiving touchdown.

The team is 31st in total yardage per game (259.2), 31st in yards per play (4.3), and 29th in third down conversion percentage. The pass game averages 5.5 yards per pass (also 31st), and is dead last in the NFL in passing yards per game. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see the team as sellers before the trade deadline, but even if they retain their weapons, they need to quickly find a way to involve them in the game if they want to turn this thing around.
