YANKEES VS. METS 6/26/24
The New York Yankees are headed toward 100-plus victories. For the last seven weeks, the New York Mets have been attempting to just get back to .500. Neither team has realy looked like its record as of late. In the second game of a two-game Subway Series, the Mets will host the Yankees tonight with the hopes of carrying on their winning streak. The Mets will start left-hander Sean Manaea (4-3, 4.16 ERA) against Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (9-2, 2.77).
Tuesday night the Mets won 9–7 thanks in large part to two home runs from Mark Vientos. A revitalized lineup continues to aid the Mets in digging themselves out of the hole they dug when they went 9-19 in May. The Mets also got home runs from Harrison Bader and Brandon Nimmo. The Mets have improved to within one game of .500 at 38-39 after going 14-6 this month. That is the best record in the majors. Since June 1, they have amassed the highest run total in the National League with 123.
With the exception of Pete Alonso, who lofted a sacrifice fly to score the game's winning run in the sixth inning, every starter for the Mets had at least one hit on Tuesday. One of four Mets with two hits was Jeff McNeil, who came into the game mired in a 3-for-34 slump that stretched back to June 11.
Despite their 52-29 record and a two-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East at the halfway point of the season, the Yankees haven't been having much fun lately. With Anthony Rizzo (broken right forearm) and Giancarlo Stanton (right hamstring) on the injured list, the Yankees have lost eight of their last eleven games and have been outscored 71-50 during that time.
During their slump, the Yankees have scored four runs or less six times. They trailed 9-1 on Tuesday before scoring once in the seventh inning and then five more times in the eighth. Four of those runs in the eighth came on Aaron Judge's grand slam.
In his most recent start last Wednesday, Manaea gave up three runs in 5.1 innings as the Mets lost 5-3 to the Texas Rangers. However, he did not factor into the decision. In his six career starts against the Yankees, he is 1-3 with a 4.46 ERA.
The Yankees were defeated by the Orioles last Thursday, 17-5, and Gil was given the loss after giving up seven runs in 1.1 innings. In his previous nine starts, the American League Rookie of the Year contender had an ERA of 1.14 and was 8-0. He's never pitched against the Mets.

After a 9-7 run-fest last night, Luis Gil and Sean Manaea are going to calm things down a bit. Gil had his first blow up last time out. He gave up 7 ER in just 1.1 IP. That isn’t happening again. Gil gets back to his 2.77 ERA and goes deep in this one. Manaea has allowed 3 and 1 earned run in his last two starts and he has had excellent command over the past month. Last year’s Subway Series followed a similar pattern - a bunch of runs in Game 1 and closer, low-scoring Game 2. We’ll see that tonight.
